Explore Big C's Snack Bar

If you ever find yourself in Saint John, New Brunswick, one spot that quietly wins people over again and again is Big C's Snack Bar. Tucked along Dever Road, this casual eatery might look like a classic snack bar at first glance, but it has built a reputation that goes far beyond its humble appearance. What immediately stands out is how seriously the kitchen takes gluten-free dining. For anyone with celiac disease or gluten sensitivities, finding comfort food that feels safe can be a challenge, yet here the menu delivers that rare combination of reassurance and indulgence. Diners often rave about being able to enjoy items that are typically off-limits, like crispy mozzarella sticks or golden chicken fingers, all prepared with careful attention to avoiding cross-contamination.

Beyond dietary considerations, the food itself consistently earns high praise. The poutine, a Canadian staple, is frequently highlighted for its rich flavor and satisfying portions, while the chicken strips and sides are described as fresh, well-cooked, and genuinely delicious rather than just “good for gluten-free.” Cleanliness and attention to detail also seem to be part of the experience, adding an extra layer of confidence for guests who need to be cautious about what they eat.

What’s especially telling is that people are willing to travel from outside the city just to try it, and many become repeat visitors regardless of dietary needs. Even those without allergies find themselves returning simply because the food holds up on its own merits. There’s a welcoming, no-fuss atmosphere that makes it easy to focus on what matters most: comforting, well-prepared dishes that everyone at the table can enjoy without worry.

At first, I tough we had the wrong adress seeing the outside of the place who does look at a place to eat. I found them on Find me GF app, so I knew they were gluten free items, but I never tough they were as many for my gluten free condition. I have no word enough strong to explain how good the food was and great my experience was. The owner was sweet, carefull for cross-contact even with the fork. She cooks everything and as a celiac person she knows and relate to my condition. I feeled normalize. I ate mozza sticks, bacon poutine with lactose free cheese and chicken strips. I had an emotion eating the strips, they were so crispy, tasfull and delicious. I don't remember the last time I had strips this good. So good, I bring some frozen to cook home. I bring a brownies cheese cake with a chocolate and caramel ganache too. Thanks a lot for that experience, that was worth the trip!

No better place to go for people with gluten free allergies. I don't personally have any allergies but my ex had some serious celiac. The food tastes absolutely amazing and she never had a reaction even once. Still go there often the place is a 10 out of 10

Drove down from Fredericton just to try it out. As a celiac I am always looking for new options and they certainly didn't disappoint! Had a regular poutine, gluten free chicken strips and gluten free mozza sticks. Everything was amazing. Thank you!

Super delicious 1/2 lb cheeseburger platter with poutine fries. The price was right and the portions were generous and quite filling. Staff were very nice and talkative. Will be back very soon!!

Unreal! I haven’t had gluten free mozzarella sticks in 6 years. Don’t sleep on this place, super clean and cautious towards gluten allergies! Wow! We had mozzarella sticks, poutine and chicken fingers and everything was top notch.

This place is a hidden gem for all things Gluten Free Travelling from Ontario we weren’t sure what to expect, food was top notch, service was top notch, the curb appeal does not accurately represent how immaculately clean the kitchen was. Would recommend this place to anyone who is looking for delicious gluten free foods!

The food here is incredible! The time is pretty normal for a similar place, but everything is made fresh is why. It's DEFINITELY worth the extra couple minutes. If you have celiac or a gluten allergy, THIS IS THE PLACE. And they have baked goods as well! Some in the freezer, some fresh - all incredible. Wife and I go at least once a week for the poutine

My family really likes this place. The people who run the place are very nice and friendly with a great sense of humor. My son loves the mac and cheese bites, the fish and chips were huge and the poutine was tasty (and big enough you basically got two meals out of it). I highly recommend you support this place. It's not a big deal to me, but apparently there are a lot of gluten free options too, so if that's your need, you'll find it here too!
